June 23, 2010 council meeting minutes
REGULAR MEETING – DANUBE CITY COUNCIL – JUNE 23, 2010
Mayor Gene Allex called the regular meeting of the Danube City Council to order at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Councilmembers present: Sharon Lothert, Al Strunc, Ryan Bentley, and Bob Simpson. Absent: None
Also present: Les Schneider, Sr. and Susan Williams.
A motion was made by Bentley to approve the agenda with the addition of “sale at school” and “approve 2 year gambling lease for Danube Lions” under new business. Simpson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Simpson to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of June 9, 2010 as submitted, with one minor word correction. Bentley seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Les Schneider, Sr. was present to discuss the insurance policy renewal for the City of Danube. He stated that the renewal was in jeopardy because the renewal and tort liability waiver hadn’t been returned to him. At the last meeting, the council hadn’t approved the waiver of the $500,000 tort liability limit established by the State of Minnesota, because they did not understand why they would waive the limit. Schneider explained that the City has always waived that limit. The City’s policy has a $1.5 million limit per occurrence.
A motion was made by Strunc to waive the tort liability limit set by the State of Minnesota. Bentley seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Public Works Director, Dan Kaufenberg, was not present for the council meeting, but left notes for the council discussing what he has been doing. The list included:
· The street sweeper has been fixed
· 2nd Street East has been sprayed for dust control
· Duininck’s prepared a quote of $3728 to do street repairs in the areas where there were water main breaks this spring.
· Kaufenberg received a recommendation from the City of Renville to use Lauritsen Septic to clean the sewer lines in Danube.
Strunc stated that he wants a report from Kaufenberg on the school roof. He also mentioned that the gutter weeds along the streets need to be sprayed. Strunc thinks that the broken up and unlevel concrete around the elevator shaft at the school is the cause for the water problem in the elevator.
A motion was made by Strunc to approve the quote from Duininck’s for $3728 to repair the streets where there were water main breaks. Simpson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Strunc to approve the use of Lauritsen Septic to clean a section of the town’s sewer lines, as indicated by Kaufenberg, up to approximately $6,000 in cost. Simpson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The Clerk told the council that Kelly Mahoney requested another 30 day extension on bringing his garage into compliance with his building permit application and City code. The council decided not to grant another extension.
The Community Center and School building rental schedule was reviewed by the council. The Community Center will be used during Danube Fun Days by the Danube Historical Society and the Danube Lions.
The Clerk informed the council that blight letters were sent out with a deadline of June 30 to clean up the premises. She has received a couple phone calls from residents stating when they were going to clean up their property.
A surveyor was in town to survey 2nd Street East. Lee Elfering, City Engineer, received little information from the County regarding the tile line that goes through Danube.
A motion was made by Strunc to approve the bills as submitted in the amount of $67,147.29, which includes the addition of a check for $692.94 to Mills Auto for squad car repairs. The check for $51,851.00 to Forcier-Marty’s Roofing will be held until the Clerk receives the written warranty on labor and materials. Bentley seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Strunc and Allex will attend training for the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization on August 13.
The Clerk did not have a final list of election judges available and will have it for the next meeting. The council decided the judges will be paid $10 per hour.
Allex inquired as to any items the City would like to purchase at the auction at the Sacred Heart School building. Folding chairs and tables were mentioned.
A motion was made by Strunc to approve a 2 year gambling lease for the Danube Lions Club to run from August 1, 2010 through July 31, 2012. Simpson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
At 8:00 p.m., there being no further business to discuss, a motion was made by Lothert to adjourn the meeting. Bentley seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Respectfully submitted: Sara Wilson, City Clerk
